Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about DSSSB photo, signature & thumb impression requirements
What is the exact DSSSB photo size?
DSSSB requires a "postcard size" photograph of 5 × 7 inches, which the official OARS portal specifies as 480 × 672 pixels, in JPEG format, with a file size between 50 KB and 300 KB. DSSSB notifications typically accept a DPI range of 96–200; this tool tags the file at 200 DPI (the top of that range) for maximum quality metadata, since the portal primarily validates pixel dimensions and file size rather than enforcing a strict DPI. This is noticeably larger in pixel dimensions than the passport-size photo used by most other government forms, so a generic passport photo tool will not produce the right ratio.
What size should the DSSSB signature be?
The signature should be 140 × 110 pixels in landscape orientation, JPEG format, with a maximum file size of 40 KB (per the official DSSSB OARS portal). Sign with black or blue ink on plain white paper and photograph or scan it clearly before uploading.
Do I need both left and right thumb impressions?
Most DSSSB notifications ask for a left thumb impression (LTI), and some also request a right thumb impression (RTI). Both should be 110 × 140 pixels, JPEG, 5–40 KB. Use a clean ink pad on plain white paper and make sure the ridges are clearly visible.
Is my photo uploaded to your server?
No. All cropping, resizing and compression happens entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server, so your photo, signature and thumb impression stay private on your device.
Why does my file come out smaller than the minimum KB?
Very simple, low-detail images (like a thumb impression on plain white paper) can compress to a very small size even at high quality. The tool will show a warning chip if the result lands below the minimum. In that case, try a source image with slightly more visible detail, or check whether your specific notification enforces a strict minimum at all — many only enforce a maximum.
Can I rename the downloaded file?
The tool downloads each file with a clear default name — photo.jpg, signature.jpg, left-thumb.jpg, right-thumb.jpg — which you can simply rename after saving, using your device's file manager, before uploading to the OARS portal.
